Chrysler plans to build a large number of vehicles on the basis of its new global medium platform, ranging from sedans and hatchbacks to small vans and crossovers, according to the head of the business of product development, Frank Klegon.

Speaking to the Automotive news Auto Show Chicago, Klegon said the new platform will replace the one currently in service with the Chrysler Sebring, Dodge Avenger, Dodge and Journey.

In December, as part of the realignment of company's products, Chrysler has created a D project team, headed by Engineer Michael Donoughe, working on the next generation of vehicles that will use the basis of average size throughout the World.

Klegon said, "They must look at where we should go to the next midsegment cars. It will take a platform existing and building upon it, to develop a new platform. It could be front-wheel drive, it might be rear-wheel drive, it may be the opportunity to spend.

Among the responsibilities of the group are the decision on where the new vehicles will be built and whether Chrysler would seek partnerships with other automakers. New vehicles evolution of this development effort are expected to appear within five to six years.

Size and weight are critical determinants, like all automobile manufacturers feel under pressure to meet the new standards for fuel economy. "Everybody is in this form of hunting," said Klegon.
